Ark Charter Academy will provide every student with the opportunity to thrive within a rich combination of academic and personal growth. Our vision is to create a whole child that will be resilient and equipped with skills, confidence and academic achievement to go on to university or follow the career path of their choice, no matter what their start point.

Every student will start a new and exciting journey of learning for the new academic year of September 2017- July 2018. The voyage of personal and academic discovery at Charter Academy will shape every student to be all they can be by clearly establishing individual strengths and weaknesses, which will be improved upon and supported by a dedicated staff.

At Charter Academy, we will relentlessly employ excellent teaching and superb pastoral care. We expect our students to work equally hard to achieve and challenge themselves, developing a continual thirst for learning. Close community relationships between staff and students, parents and carers will feature strongly throughout every day at our school. The partnership between home and school is a critical link that I will be conscious of and continuously develop so that together we can work to maximise the experience and opportunity of every young person, as they so richly deserve.

We want every student to be proud of their school and themselves as they embark on their journey of self-discovery, culminating in high achievement and a desire to make their impression in the world of work and in life.

school history

Charter Academy opened its doors in September 2009, replacing St Luke’s C of E School. St Luke’s had stood on this ground from 1864 when it was set up to educate the poor of Marylebone. Originally a Sunday school it quickly expanded.  24th April 1865 marked the official opening date of St Luke’s School, Marylebone. 90 boys were admitted. Still in use today, the building of Aldwell was completed by April 1865 at a cost of £1000.

Over the course of its history St Luke’s had the threat of closure hanging over it but poor buildings and Hitler’s bombs failed to close the school.  In 1920 the school either had to be rebuilt or closed down, due to the conditions of the building but the Governors, Headmistress and Headmaster thought otherwise in the hope of gradually building up the school.

work for us

Our success has been down to the hard work of our staff, which is why we are so dedicated to developing and supporting you.

Ark Charter Academy is a school that shows the impact great teaching can have. Before becoming an Ark school, 22% of students achieved 5 A*-C at GCSE (including English and maths). Charter is now one of the most improved schools in the country and the success rate now sits at 73%.  This transformation was recently praised by the Prime Minister when he visited the school.

This would not have been possible without great teachers which why we offer the very best training and support for all of our staff at every stage of their career. We provide regular coaching sessions, weekly departmental meetings, twice as many training days as standard, plenty of collaboration in school and across the Ark network.

Our CPD offer is tailored based on the individual needs of the teacher and the department and caters for staff at every stage of their career with strands for NQTs, middle leaders and senior leaders.

Charter’s is a culture that encourages creativity and flexibility in approaches to teaching and learning. “It is not about one particular lesson plan or style, it’s about doing what is best for your class.”

We take your wellbeing is taken seriously, all meetings are scheduled for within the working day, teachers have more free periods than county council schools and we have even appointed a Staff Wellbeing Coordinator.

“The school is really accommodating and really tries to treat staff as individuals and look after their individual needs.”
